If this seems like a slightly odd list, it's because it is the BBC's Top 200 best-loved books, as distinct from other lists that name the Top 100 classics or whatever. Clearly there are Terry Pratchett, Stephen King, Jacqueline Wilson and Anthony Horowitz gaps in my reading!
I've just finished reading Hilary Mantel's Bring Up the Bodies. Loved it. It's interesting how I could read this, even knowing the history, and still be gripped by the narrative unfolding. It's Mantel's writing power and the fact that she's inside Cromwell's head. Fabulous. I hope she's hard at work on the third novel!(Interesting that she felt she was bad at plotting and that's what led her to write her first historical novel, A Greater Place of Safety. I should get a move on with studying the history course I signed up for on Coursera!)
