After the year of bushfires, 2009, when Birdsland, a near-by nature reserve burnt down, we discovered an echidna in our backyard. I believed that it had somehow trundled in from Birdsland, although when I think of that now, it doesn't make a lot of sense. I only saw it once, but about a year ago, the Accountant had a second sighting and yesterday we both saw it again. Up close.
We were charmed to make its acquaintance. Echidna's always remind me of that Les Murray poem in Translations from the Natural World. The first time I saw an echidna after reading that poem, I laughed out loud. 'Square footed' was so perfect!
